Unemployed need not apply
Warning! This post is not encouraging!
The Article This Post Refers To: Looking for work? Unemployed need not apply
Companies in the U.S. are now posting restrictions up forbidding people without jobs to apply to certain positions. It is law that applicants are not discriminated by race or gender, but there is not law that prohibits companies from publicly ignoring resumes and applications from job seekers that are currently unemployed.
“But even if companies don’t spell out in a job listing that they won’t consider someone who currently doesn’t have a job, experts said that unemployed applicants are typically ruled out right off the bat.”
I warned you that this post was not very encouraging! As a job seeker myself, I have gone through almost seven months of having hopes crushed after applying to job after job. You can read more about my personal experiences with job seeking in my recent post, Searching for success.
Below is a video of an interview of a 2009 graduate, named Stephen Augustyn. Stephen and I have a couple things in common. We both have our bachelors and we both cannot find work. I graduated in December of 2009, and I believe Stephen graduated in May of 2009. I have applied to over 70 jobs, and Stephen has applied to over 200 jobs since he graduated. I went to college for an education so that I could get a decent paying job, but due to our economy, my lack of experience, and companies ignoring those who are unemployed, I’m not getting very far. After watching the video, it doesn’t sound like Stephen has gotten very far for similar reasons.
2009 Villanova graduate Stephen Augustyn still hasn’t found a full-time job.
The article contains a quote from Judy Conti, a lobbyist for the National Employment Law Project. She stated, in response to the quote mentioned earlier in this post…
“Making that kind of automatic cut is senseless; you could be missing out on the best person of all,” she said. “There are millions of people who are unemployed through no fault of their own. If an employer feels that the best qualified are the ones already working, they have no appreciation of the crisis we’re in right now.”
I say, “Amen to that!”
